THE EAGLE Co-Editor Stephen Aranoff ñ also a frequent speaker on distribution and digital technology at the NAGASA Forum -- attended the NPES Print Outlook Conference in Washington DC in early December. Because the state of the economy for the printing community for 1999 is important to NAGASA members, Steve has summarized what he heard:

On the first day a number of industry, economic, and political pundits presented information about the projected economic climate. The second day consisted primarily of panels of printers and print buyers talking about where they are in the digital world and the biggest challenges that face them going forward, as well as their expectations of the new year.

The overall consensus is that 1998 was a better year than most had predicted. The GNP rose by over 3.5% and print production by over 5% in current dollars. In the face of the low inflation (under 1%!) many printers had an opportunity to do better financially in 1998. The prognosis doe not, however, look as good for 1999. Both print volume and profits are expected to be down overall, and with declining corporate profits the amount spent on print could be reduced. The amount to be spent on capital equipment is expected to drop as well.

Although printers and their customers are becoming more in tune with the digital revolution, and are in the mood to buy, the overall economy does not bode well for that to happen in 1999.î

Steve took over 25 pages of notes during the two-day conference, and THE EAGLE is offering NAGASA members a carefully edited commentary compiled from Steveís notes as well as a complete set of Print Outlook handouts at a special, members-only price of $399.00, plus shipping; the list price is $450.00.

This information -- available for about the cost of the Conference registration alone -- provides readers with the opportunity to gain as much insight as those who attended for much less than the cost of attending, and without having given up two days from your business. While some of the proceedings might get into print in 1999, this past year the knowledge gained at Print Outlook was not shared until summer, meaning that a half year of knowledge was lost by those not in attendance.

For a limited time NAGASA members interested in purchasing this knowledge at the special $399.00 rate can place prepaid orders through the NAGASA office by phone or by fax using the attached form. E-mail orders are also welcome! Order your Print Outlook materials today ñ and learn what the industry and the experts anticipate in 1999!
