How long has EDI been used?
Early electronic data exchanges were based on formats agreed upon by two trading partners. In the early 1960s selected industries, including the grocery, retail, transportation, and automotive segments, began separate efforts to develop EDI formats for their specific industries. There was, however, no common format for all industries that would allow any one company to communicate business documents electronically outside of its industry group. This changed in 1979 when the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) established an Accredited Standards Committee (ASC X12) to develop American standards for EDI that would apply to all industries. ASC X12 published the first EDI Standards in 1986. Today more than 50,000 organizations use over 150 EDI standards developed through ASC X12.
