What are the key next steps?
Implementing EDI will represent a significant time commitment to your
organization. Here are the suggested steps necessary to make it a success:
- Incorporate EDI into your business plan
- Assign a project manager with influence over budget, business policies,
goals, and objectives
- Form an EDI Task Force with representatives from all departments
- Obtain EDI education for management and the Task force; work with
suppliers and hire a consultant as needed
- Define your organizationís EDI strategy
- Review your organizationsí existing business processes and
determine the focus for EDI
- Determine how your business system applications will integrate with
EDI processes
- Create your EDI implementation schedule
- Evaluate hardware and software needs
- Select a Value Added Network
- Implement and test an EDI transaction set that is important to your
processes; plan to use Functional Acknowledgements for all transaction
sets since these confirm back to the sender that the receiver did, in
fact, get the document as intended.
