U.S. Print Shipments Up 7.5 Percent, Hit $142 Billion
ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA -- Thanks to the strong economy, 1997 was a good year for the printing industry as shipments reached the $142 billion mark (4.2 percent when adjusted for inflation) increase over 1996, according to Printing Industries of America's soon to be released 1998 Print Market Atlas. "Despite merger mania, the industry not only saw an increase in sales, but also a growth in number of establishments and employees," noted Dr. Ronnie H. Davis, PIA's chief economist. "The total number of printing establishments increased from 52,097 in 1996 to 52,272 in 1997. Nearly 40,000 new jobs were created last year." Excerpt from PIA press release.
