Xerox, Microsoft Unveil Tech Plan
To Make It Simpler To Scan, Sort, Send, Store.
Microsoft Corp. and Xerox Corp. unveiled plans to share technology to
make it easier to go from “paper to digital.” They will co-market
the end products.
The plan is to integrate Xerox's Document Centre into Microsoft's Exchange
Server messaging software. Xerox will license Windows NT Embedded 4.0
for future Document Centre products and Microsoft will license Xerox's
WebForager technology, which provides a 3-D interface that lets people
flip through pages in a digital book as if it were a real one. Eventually,
digital cameras and hand-held computers will be added to the mix.
Products are scheduled to ship in the 3rd quarter of this year. The idea
is to run paper documents through a Xerox machine and output digital files
that can be quickly and automatically sent to computers anywhere.
The partnership was designed to address the paper glut in offices today and the lack of an easy way to digitize them. The companies are building on NT and targeting devices whose prices have dropped significantly.
