printing in the competitive Houston market. Now, for the first time they
can truly document and analyze their high-quality objectives, while cutting
makeready time by digitally linking their prepress process to their pressroom. That major step comes with the installation of the first Heidelberg CPC
32 prepress interface in the Houston area. The interface automatically
presets all of a press' ink zones directly from the prepress data. The prime purpose of using the Heidelberg CPC 32 module is to reduce
makeready time, since the device eliminates the need for the press operator
to adjust each printing unit's ink zone settings manually. An ancillary
benefit is more precise presetting of ink zones. Values are taken directly
from the same data used to RIP the images that will produce plates for
each job at hand. Emmott-Walker will be using the CPC 32 interface in conjunction with
the CPC 21 spectrophotometry system that allows a computer to see the
ink color much like the human eye. That gives the company both a way to
enter ink profile data more accurately from the start as well as a means
to check the consistency of the product as the print run progresses. Emmott-Walker serves three major client bases: graphic designers, advertising
agencies and corporations. Though all three want high quality printing,
they all have very different quality requirements. Now, with CPC 32 and
CPC 21, those needs can be carefully identified, calculated and measured.
The CPC 32 and CPC 21 are a dynamic-duo that assures the quality clients
need while producing histograms with statistical data supporting consistent
results throughout the press runs. The CPC 32 Prepress Interface can be used to calculate ink zone coverage
settings on any Heidelberg press equipped with the company's CPC 1.02-1.04
computerized print control system. The values are obtained directly from
a Print Production Format (PFF) file produced during prepress and are
transferred to the CPC 1.02-1.04 system via a flash memory card or by
wire. The CPC 32 and CPC 21 systems will be connected to a pair of Heidelberg
Speedmaster presses at Emmot-Walker: a new 40" 6-color CD 102 with
coater, and a 1986 40" 4-color SM 102 perfecter that is being refurbished
as part of this installation.
