Y2K Liability Reform Passed
August, 1999, Washington, DC: The National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors
(NAW) announced that, in a major victory for wholesaler-distributors and
the entire business community, the Y2K Act (Public Law 106-37) was signed
into law on July 20, 1999. Following in the wake of its success in securing
the enactment of the Year 2000 Information and Readiness Disclosure Act
(Public Law 105-271) support for the more sweeping Y2K Act was led by
the Y2K Coalition of which NAW was a leading member. This new statute
is designed to encourage remediation rather than litigation and to prepare
the civil justice system to fairly and productively address liability
issues that arise from Y2K failures. According to NAW, the plaintiff attorneys
lobbied feverishly to defeat the Y2K Act, and its enactment represents
a stinging setback for the trial lawyers.
The Act establishes uniform legal standards to govern Y2K claims and
discourages frivolous and costly litigation brought by opportunistic parties
involving Y2K failures.

Anitec Newspaper Company Announces Canadian Sales Manager and New
Distribution Center

Glenbard Graphics Installs First Midwest Platerite 8000 from Screen
(USA)
July 30, 1999, Rolling Meadows, IL: Glenbard Graphics, a sheetfed/web
printer located in suburban Chicago, has become the first Midwest company
to install a Screen USA PlateRite 8000 thermal plate recorder. Glenbard
Graphics already was the largest user of Screen equipment in the Chicago
area. The company has invested over $2 million in digital products, outfitting
the business with three TaigaSPACE automated workflow systems, two TrueRite
TCP-1080 digital proofing systems, and a Cezanne flatbed scanner. Glenbard
is using Cezanne with a Copydot program to convert finished film to a
digital file to incorporate in their digital workflow. Glenbard is also
pleased with the Fuji non pre-bake thermal plates it is using on the PlateRite
8000.
According to Screen, the PlateRite 8000 is one of the fastest thermal
plate recorders available. Beta testing showed that the unit can resolve
up to 4000 dpi with true round dots. Imaging of plates at 2,400 dpi to
4000 dpi, the PlateRite can use non pre-bake plates from Fuji, Western
Lithotech, Kodak Polychrome graphics, and Agfa. Maximum plate size is
37" x 45.6" while the minimum size is 21.6" x 25.6"

Rexam Announces Re-organization

Apple Serves Up a Home Run in Large Print Shops
August, 1999: According to TrendWatch research, of the more than 29,400+ desktops owned by the 9,700+ printing establishments with 20 1/2" sheetfed presses or larger in the U.S., more than half (56%) are Apple desktops. And another 9% are Mac clone desktops. On the server front, Apple servers are a hit with 36% of this segment (2,000+ of over 5,700 total servers). Portable computers are also on the rise, and Apple again leads the way (58%) of laptops used in production. TrendWatch suggests this data is important because Apple has led the way in graphic production, trade shops, and large printers for many years. Small print shops have shown preference for PCs, often because of their prices -- at least until the new iMacs and G3s came along. Apple is returning to its dominant position in the market, even with small printers.

NAGASA to be Represented at Southprint 1999
Through its European representative, Danny Moloney, NAGASA will participate
this September at Southprint 1999 in booth 269. The event takes place
September 21-23 at Earls Court 2 in London. Southprint is one of two major
print trade shows in the United Kingdom this year, the other being Northprint,
which serves the North of England. Southprint is anticipated to attract
up to 10,000 visitors. The show is a merger between the previous London
Print Show and the Southprint show itself. NAGASA will be featured in
all pre-show, show, and post-show activities.
