TRENDWATCH RELEASES "ASSESSING THE U.S. CREATIVE MARKETS' DEMAND FOR INTERNET-BASED GRAPHIC PRODUCTION"

-- The new report in the TrendWatch Internet Series is available from the TrendWatch e-Store for $1250 --

Report Highlights...

  • Among creative firms involved with the Web, the percentage sending proofs via email is about two-thirds, while the percentage saying they won't ever do this is about 5%;
  • The importance of the Internet as a sales channel is growing: 53% percent of creative shops say they buy software on-line and 38% buy computer hardware on-line -- these have increased steadily and significantly since 1996;
  • Applications that creative pros say they are most likely not to use are interesting: 41% say they will not participate in Internet job bidding for print and other services, and 36% say they will not use the Internet to track the status of print jobs;
  • The number one Internet activity that creative professionals plan to add in the future is to use the Internet as a sales tool for their own businesses;
  • Despite the hoopla in the trade press about printing industry dot-com companies, there is very little awareness about them in the creative marketplace. In fact, we found that only one company came close to being known to a majority of respondents.

HARRISVILLE, RI -- May 4, 2000 -- The TrendWatch Internet Series: Assessing the U.S. Creative Markets' Demand for Internet-Based Graphic Production was announced today by TrendWatch and is available now at the TrendWatch eStore in a downloadable PDF format at www.trendwatch.com. This 100+ page special report discusses how the creative markets use and plan to use the Internet to conduct their print related business.

This report continues TrendWatch's examination of the Internet and its impact on print and prepress workflow. In addition, with all of the interest in printing "dot-coms," this report was developed to serve as a reality check on where the opportunities are today and where they will be tomorrow. According to TrendWatch Partner, Jim Whittington, "We have no doubt that the Internet will revolutionize workflow and dramatically alter business and production relationships. The nagging questions are "how much?", "when?", and "for whom?"

According to the report...

  • Customers are pushing their agencies and designers into the world of Web-interconnectivity. New dot-com companies are enabling Internet-based professional creative and printing services ;
  • Demand for creative services is just one issue. With the business world now running on Internet time, creative shop owners have been challenged to do more faster and to keep pace with client expectations;
  • Designers and ad agencies, used to personal contact with customers, are being swept into e-communications through "on-line collaborative environments" handled by on-line workflow facilitators;
  • PDF is now an industry standard for sending proofs and comps to clients from creative shops, and is approaching this level for sending digital print jobs to printers.

How this report was developed...
This special report is based on original TrendWatch market research with owners and executives of creative and print business throughout the U.S. TrendWatch proprietary data is combined with expert analysis and commentary to present a current snapshot and unique perspective about how the Internet is being and will be used by creative professionals, combined with demographic market size data. This report also discusses what Internet services are not likely to have wide adoption by creative professionals.

More selected report highlights...

  • Only slightly more than 6,700 shops (mostly less than 9 employees) have an FTP site where freelancers, etc. download or upload work files;
  • Half of all creative shops use e-mails for proofs using PDF or other file attachments;
  • Slightly more than 4,500 shops use electronic signatures for contracts and other legal documents;
  • Almost 9,000 creative shops don't know if they will use the Internet to find qualified employees;
  • Only 2,300 shops with 10-19 employees use the Internet as a sales tool now;
  • Almost 8000 creative shops say they don't expect to look for stock photo images from sites.
