ADAST INTRODUCING ITS NEW 557 DI MACHINE DESIGNED TO LEAD THE B3 DIRECT IMAGING MARKET

May 22, 2000; Dusseldorf, Germany
ADAST entered the digital market in 1997 with the world's first A2 digital offset press for four-up printing, the 705C DI. At DRUPA 2000 ADAST has once again moved to the center of the Direct Imaging B3 market with the introduction of its new completely automated 557 DI, five color B3 printing machine.

This press is designed to be the world's best solution for On-Demand printing. For runs of even a few hundred sheets the 557 DI is the fastest to print, lowest cost per sheet and best quality of any direct imaging technology. The maximum printing speed is 12,000 sheets per hour and the optimum use of this press is jobs in the range of 500-5000 prints. Compared to toner-based solutions the 557 DI offers a lower cost per sheet in runs as low as 200 prints while delivering offset quality. All operations from replenishing up to 5 plates, blanket washing, plate imaging to plate cleaning are completely automatic. Using Presstek's patented automatic plate cylinder, which feeds plates to all units from a reel inside the plate cylinder, a complete press plate changeover is done in 20 seconds.

ADAST uses the most reliable, and proven On Press imaging system, Presstek Pearl* technology. The new 557 DI uses a unique design that de-clutches the plate cylinder to allow higher speed imaging while the rest of the press is stopped. The high speed imaging is made possible with Presstek ProFire unit. All 5 plates can be imaged in 2 minutes and 40 seconds at 1270 dpi. Plates are imaged in register and cleaned automatically. The press is ready to run regular jobs in under 8 minutes and high-resolution jobs in under 12.

With ADAST 557 DI printers can go beyond basic four color printing to offer customers a full range of stock choices with any inks, including metallic, PMS and fluorescent. The 5th unit can also be used for spot varnishing.

All Drupa visitors can witness the triple world premiere of the 557 DI press. The machine is running at the ADAST booth B 20 in hall 17, at Presstek's stand and at the booth of Xerox.

ADAST 557 DI machines are targeted for the US and European markets and will be sold through the ADAST distribution network, and Presstek.

ADAST has a global distribution network and is moving to direct representation in major markets because today's printers demand that manufacturers work closely with them, to be responsive and stay competitive. Last year ADAST went direct in Poland, Slovakia and America, and is pleased to announce the creation of Adast Deutschland at Drupa. The new company is a true partnership between the factory and our German distributor and will improve ADAST's market penetration in this very important neighbouring country.
