NAGASA Recognizes Channel Leaders at Forum 2000 Awards Dinner

Washington, DC, June 1, 2000: North American Graphic Arts Suppliers Association (NAGASA) recognized three channel leaders during the association’s Forum 2000 event in San Antonio, Texas. NAGASA Board Chairman Joe Thornhill, President and CEO of Taylor Impression, Inc., presided over the ceremony at which NAGASA members were honored.

Jon Wright, President, Graphic Systems Incorporated, received the Mullan Award. Named for James F. Mullan, NAGASA’s Founding Board Chair, the award is presented to an individual who "sets a standard of excellence in the channel through professional integrity, business leadership, vision for the channel, and looking beyond one’s own interests in order to advance the channel." In recognizing him, channel members cited Wright’s commitment to improving the channel through activities that have included developing better dealer/vendor relations, fostering development and wider use of electronic data interchange and bar codes, expanding channel and channel customer comprehension of and compliance with environmental regulations, and adherence to sound business practices that have earned him praise and recognition from customers, suppliers, and peers are just some of the highlights all underscoring Jon Wright’s deserved recognition through the Mullan Award.

Barbara Morgan, President, Morgan Graphic Supply in San Francisco was honored with NAGASA’s Favat Award. Named posthumously for John Favat, Sr., who inspired the formation of NAGASA, the award is presented to an individual whose energy, commitment, and services have advanced NAGASA and its leadership position. Industry members cited Morgan as the type of person who exemplifies the type of contribution to NAGASA and the channel called for by the Favat Award, noting under her leadership that Barbara and her team at Morgan Graphic Supply have been steadfast contributors to NAGASA committees, programs, and efforts. Industry members note also that she has simultaneously been astute at managing her firm’s growth in a time of change and consolidation.

Melvyn London Lifetime Achievement Award, named for the first recipient of the award in 1997, is presented to an individual who has demonstrated lifelong achievement, loyalty, and service to the channel and a career that inspires professionalism and creativity to those entering distribution. This year the channel recognized Joe Von Zwehl of Varn International. Included among the reasons NAGASA members recognized Joe was the fact that throughout his 35-year career in graphic arts distribution he consistently demonstrated leadership of both his company and the channel. He has been an active supporter of NAGASA as well as a strong advocate of distribution through dealers. Under his leadership Varn has expanded to become an international organization working through dealers to serve the needs of customers in seven continents while also expanding it product offerings to encompass pressroom chemistry, blankets, and other pressroom supplies.

The 1999-2000 Awards and Nominations Committee, which was co-chaired by Thornhill and Manufacturing Vice President Kelly VandenBosch, X-Rite Corporation, included Dan Maffeo, Fuji Photo Film; Don Mergler, Washington Printing Supplies; Jack Murphy, The Murphy Company; Dave Pheatt, Varn International; Jim Purcell, PrimeSource; and Chris Wagner, Nessler & Wagner Company, Inc.

The North American Graphic Arts Suppliers Association (NAGASA) is the world’s largest association devoted to the needs of dealers, distributors, value-added resellers, and manufacturers who sell through these organizations. NAGASA and its member network represent more than $4.5 billion of traditional and digital equipment and supplies within the total $6 billion printing and imaging channel marketplace. With hundreds of member firms, NAGASA is dedicated to advancing the channel as the source of value added quality products and services for customers.
