TrendWatch Fast Fact #77: Alan Greenspan is Obviously NOT a Printer!

This Week (6/6/2000): TrendWatch BCI Business Indicator Shows Slowing of U.S. Commercial Print Industry.

The Spring 2000 TrendWatch Printing Industry BCI moved up slightly, from 83.8 in Fall 1999 to 86.5 this Spring, showing very slight growth. This is not encouraging in light of the robust economy that the Fed thinks is still "too hot."

Major Print Market Segments...

  • Commercial Printers: 83.7 (down slightly, lowest index ever);
  • Service Bureaus: 123.7 (strong gain as weak businesses forced out and winners remain);
  • Color separators: 50.9 (down, in serious trouble as these shops look for new opportunities).

Why should you care?...

The big engine that always could is now feeling the pain of new cyber-track being laid into the land of new media. If your company can help print businesses develop new revenue streams, you'll be the new engine that could. And the way we see it, you'll survive and grow. Print business must figure out how to become strategic partners with their customers. Even with a boiler full of steam this is no small task!
