TrendWatch Fast Fact #77: Direct-To Stirs Up Recipe for Strategy Changes

The end is near for Separators and Platemakers if they don't change their business strategies...

Fortunately, some of these businesses are busily adding digital and traditionalprinting services. In fact, 17% of separators and platemakers say that selling print services through brokers (yep, you read it right!) is a new business opportunity -- its highest level ever in our surveys.

For the past several years separators and platemakers have struggled to stay in business as "direct-to" technologies have finally started to take off reducing the number of jobs in these shops. And as our BCI business indicators show, life in this segment is not good right now.

Why should you care?...

This is a simple equation; if they don't change their business strategy to replace jobs lost to direct-to technologies, they will likely go out of business or if they're lucky, find a new businesses (as typesetters did years ago). The real question, however, is who the customers will be -- who will the new breed of e-print brokers attract?
