Assessment & Directions of Distribution Practices by Manufacturers

The Assessment & Directions of Distribution Practices by Manufacturers survey is a first in the industry by exploring the relationship between manufacturers and the dealers they rely upon to move their products - from the manufacturers' point of view. The report is the fifth study in an ongoing statistical series from NAGASA documenting the distribution channel.

Data in the 68 Page Report

  • Includes data from 92 manufacturers representing nearly 60% of the NAGASA manufacturer membership
  • Details the sales of graphic arts products through dealers
  • Contains verbatim responses evaluating the dealer-manufacturer relationship
  • Categorizes data by various supplier categories including 45 manufacturers of consumable products, 21 of prepress equipment, computers and software, 26 of pressroom, bindery, and mechanical prepress equipment.

Insights and Details

  • Respondents indicated that nearly 67% of their total North American sales volume passes through dealers and VARs.
  • Manufacturers expect the number of graphic arts dealers to decline by more than 30% by the year 2000.
  • Prepress manufacturers expressed the greatest satisfaction with their dealers.
  • Manufacturers expressed the belief that printers and trade shops would rather buy from dealers than from manufacturers directly.

In announcing the study, NAGASA president and CEO David J. Steinhardt commented: "In releasing the study, NAGASA expects to strengthen the ties between dealers and manufacturers, to benefit the entire industry." The study was completed in late 1996 by Mason Consulting. In early 1997 NAGASA will undertake a study of dealer viewpoints on the manufacturer-dealer relationship. These efforts are guided by the NAGASA Statistics Committee made up of dealers and manufacturers.
