Perspectives–From The President January – named for the Roman God Janus who looks both forward and backward – appropriately begins our New Year. Looking back, I have had a most educational and enjoyable first year with the support of a strong and helpful Board of Directors and committed membership. As part of this, my arrival correlated with other staff changes at NAGASA. Rochelle Smith and Vickie Braxton Schulz have moved on to new challenges in their lives and their careers, and I know that you join me in wishing them continued success in their future endeavors. Looking forward, I am pleased to report to you that Greg DuRoss has joined the staff of NAGASA. Prior to Greg’s arrival we talked about NAGASA operations, and, recognizing that with this transition we were re-organizing from a staff of three to a staff of two, a job title for the position. While job titles should reflect the work associated with the position, experience suggests that this is not always the case. Looking at the range of program, editorial, committee, conference, planning, and other responsibilities associated with this newly created role, Greg observed that the position should emphasize serving the members and so we have given this position the title of "Director of Member Services." In this capacity he will be collaborating with me and the membership in every facet of NAGASA’s exciting activities. I share this with you because Greg’s emphasis on customer service is just one of the things that I found appealing when I talked with him. He sees you, the members, as customers, and believes that we, the staff, are here to provide information and services that help you succeed in your businesses. That philosophy, along with his recent experience in another segment of the distribution industry that has faced challenges similar to those confronting the printing and imaging channel, will prove invaluable as NAGASA members manage the changes underway in the channel. Greg brings to NAGASA over twenty-five years of experience in both the non-profit and private sectors. During his five years at the American Machine Tool Distributors’ Association he was responsible for the development and launch of a pioneering marketing data program for members. Greg was also actively involved in the ongoing strategic planning process for his association and the machine tool distribution industry. Please join me in welcoming Greg. He is anxious to learn more about our channel and what members are thinking. Feel free to give him a call 202-328-8441 or write to him at grdnagasa@aol.com. As we close out the year, the decade and the century, both Greg and I thank you for your support of the channel and wish that everyone have a happy holiday season and a prosperous new year. We look forward to working with you in 2000.
