NAGASA Presents 1999 Awards
NAGASA Membership Director Vickie Braxton Schulz and Forum 99 Media Coordinator David Yunghans, of DuPont Color Proofing, presided over the annual awards dinner presentations during the Association¹s Seventh Annual Forum meeting held in Phoenix, Arizona. NAGASA’s current Past Chair, Brian H. Kroot, President of
Northeastern Graphic Supply, was the recipient of the Association’s
coveted Mullan Award. Named after James F. Mullan, NAGASA’s
Founding Board Chair, this award is presented to an individual
who sets a standard of channel xcellence through professional
integrity, business leadership, channel vision, and advancement.
Kroot was nominated for his work as Board Chair during NAGASA’s
leadership change this past fall. According to those nominating
him for the Award, Kroot “has always been willing to take
the time to work closely with the organization staff — before,
during and after the transition between presidents.”
Dennis Cross, Director of Graphics for xpedx’s West Region,
was honored with NAGASA’s Favat Award. Named posthumously
for John Favat, Sr. — the man who inspired the formation
of NAGASA — the award is presented to an individual whose
energy, commitment, and services have advanced NAGASA and its
leadership position. Cross served as two-term past president of
GASA, one of NAGASA’s predecessor organizations, and was
instrumental in overseeing the GASA/NAGADA merger, which formed
the current Association. Cross was also honored for his continued
support of NAGASA through his articipation on various committees
and in many association programs.
LDR (Litho Development & Research) was the winner of NAGASA’s
Innovator Award. This award highlights a unique business approach
or practice of an individual or company, one perhaps outside the
traditional channel business model. Under the direction of owner
Ralph Johnson, LDR was cited for its success in supporting electronic
prepress processes while continuing its business of selling and
supporting traditional consumables and equipment. LDR is nationally
recognized as a leader in the distribution of electronic prepress
equipment, systems, andservices who continues to maintain a large
bindery sales operation as well. An example of LDR’s success
in the electronic arena includes the development of the Fusion
Digital Front-end (DFE) System, which handles electronic prepress
functions using a streamlined workflow.
For only the second time, NAGASA recognized a “Lifetime” Channel contributor for his efforts in the advancement of the industry. Don Garner, retired President of Dixie Type & Supply (now a part of the PrimeSource Organization), was presented with the Melvyn London Lifetime Achievement Award. Named for its first recipient, the award is given to an individual who has demonstrated lifelong achievement, loyalty, and service to the channel. Throughout his career, Garner showed a willingness to work with customers, peers, and manufacturers to enhance the channel. Additionally, Garner served as a Board member of NGADA prior to its merger with GASA. To quote from his nomination, “Garner is a businessman of integrity who exemplifies the Channel’s highest standards.”
New NAGASA President & CEO Peter Brehm presented the awards to all recipients. “This is truly an honor for me,” said Brehm. “What better way to begin my tenure than to meet these individuals and be part of the acknowledgement process of their many contributions to NAGASA and the Channel. As noted typographer Frederic Goudy observed, ‘we stand on the shoulders of giants.’ With these awards, NAGASA is honoring the ‘giants’ and their commitment to our channel.” |
