This question was intended to determine the number of people who maintain data in dealers' computer systems. Many respondents, however, interpreted this question as pertaining to hardware maintenance, so that the data are unreliable in this area. Most dealers, however, appear to rely upon one or two employees to maintain data in their systems. This would indicate that most dealers still operate under the premise that computers and computer data are the responsibility of a single department, rather than an enterprise-wide effort.
Only two of the 57 responding dealers use bar codes for data entry. See figure 8.
This question, which businesses throughout the world are facing, provides an interesting insight into the use of computers by graphic arts dealers. As shown in figure 9, the responding 56 dealers fell into three virtually equal camps, with one third indicating that they have a problem, one third indicating that they do not, and one third which has not determined whether they have a problem.
