First Task: Developing NAGASA Institute at GATF

of the Americas 98 in Miami. From left to right: Mark Pellman,

The Education Committee was formed in early November 1997 to
direct the training and development programs for enhanced competency
and skill in marketing, sales, service, and technology. Under
the leadership of Brian Kroot of Northeastern Graphic Supply
and Kelly VandenBosch of X-Rite, the committee is moving quickly
to develop programs for the membership. The 11-member committee
is working with the Graphic Arts Technical Foundation to develop
the NAGASA Institute, a dealer-focused week-long training program
with 2 1/2 days on traditional and 2 1/2 days on digital. In
early December a needs survey was sent to all members to assess
areas of skill development and program design. We hope to launch
the program in May 1998. If you would like to support this program
and other educational efforts get involved on the Education
Committee.
New Owner-Managed Dealer Network and
Session Planned for February in California
During the September Print 97 show in Chicago 25 dealers met
to discuss ways NAGASA can better meet the needs of the independent
and owner-managed dealership. The two-hour discussion was hard-hitting
and direct on what NAGASA must do. 110 of 155 dealer members
are $10 million in sales or less. The group decided to organize
a formal network within NAGASA that would develop programs and
services focused on their needs and interests. The group took
two actions. First, an organizing committee was formed with
Jim Flaherty, Graphic Service and Equipment; Bill Manley, Graphco;
Ted Meek, Modern Photo Offset; Mike Tiburzi, Image Depot; Bruce
deRepenTigny, TBJ Graphic Arts Supply; and Jim Keefe, Jr., Pre-Press
Plus Printing Machinery. Second, the group set up a one-day
roundtable and training session before the Forum 98 meeting,
Saturday, February 21, in California. The organizing committee
took the lead on developing the program. Call for details! Now
is the time to roll up your sleeves and participate!
Trade Show Committee Group Takes Steps
to Give Members an Assessment of Shows
The Trade Show Committee is one of the Association’s longest
standing committees formed in 1995. Currently, the committee
is composed of 18 members and led by co-chairs Gene Alaura,
Olec Corporation, and Jack Maltby, Jomac, Inc. Its purpose is
developing programs that inform and influence trade show management
on the needs of the NAGASA membership. The committee developed
an assessment form to be completed by members exhibiting at
trade shows. The results are available to members (and trade
show management) to help assist them in their trade show decision
making and planning. In February the committee will conduct
FlashStudy #2 on how our members are increasing or decreasing
trade show exhibiting-- the numbers, budgets, and locations.
This information will be helpful to members in planning their
trade show strategy for 1998 to 2000. To get a copy of Print
97 assessment call NAGASA at 202-328-8441.
International Trade Committee: NAGASA
Goes Global
Increasingly, members are asking about trade and business opportunities
in Latin America and around the world. To focus our work and
plan ways to meet the growing need, NAGASA has organized the
International Trade Committee. The committee recognizes the
growing globalization of the marketplace and will support members
in importing and exporting efforts. Wesley Nosek, Day International,
and David Pheatt, Varn International, will co-chair the group.
11 members have already signed up to get involved. The first
meeting was held during Graphics of the Americas 98 in Miami
on January 17. Call NAGASA for more information.
